Cronus Quietly Delivers Big at the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit

While hundreds of thousands flooded downtown Detroit to witness the spectacle of the 2024 NFL Draft, a lesser-known but vital player was working behind the scenes to make it all happen: Cronus Internet Services. From fiber backbones to public Wi-Fi, the Detroit-based provider was quietly powering nearly every corner of the multi-day event—earning praise from city officials and national organizers alike.

From Greektown to Corktown: A Network Spanning the Draft

Cronus was brought in by the NFL, the City of Detroit, and other key agencies to design and execute a multi-layer hybrid fixed wireless  / fiber network capable of supporting one of the city’s largest-ever public gatherings. One of the only companies with the infrastructure footprint to connect Detroit’s entire Central Business District, Cronus linked together Hart Plaza, Campus Martius, Cadillac Square, Greektown, and even the NFL Draft Experience site at Detroit PAL’s Corner Ballpark in Corktown.

With hundreds of high-capacity wireless access points and a robust fiber interconnect, the company delivered seamless Wi-Fi service to thousands of fans, vendors, staff, and media personnel. Critical camera feeds—including more than 120 city cameras, many part of the Project Greenlight public safety network—were delivered directly to Detroit Police and Homeland Security analysts in real time via Cronus’s secure channels.

When Other Networks Failed, Cronus Stepped In

Just hours before the first pick was announced, one of the region’s major fiber providers suffered a critical outage. Within minutes, Cronus automatically rerouted traffic from affected partners through its own backbone, ensuring livestreams, TV feeds, and essential communications didn’t miss a beat. Roughly 40 large-format TVs in bars, restaurants, fan zones and sponsor spaces continued broadcasting without interruption.

The same infrastructure underpinned full audiovisual support for media stands and brand activations, while separate SSIDs kept public users, vendors, and secure admin operations segmented and safe.

A Backbone for Security and Community Impact

Cronus’s network also played a key role in public safety. Detroit PD, private security teams, and DHS field units relied on high-bandwidth uplinks for real-time video, radio communications, and body camera streams. Months of planning—including multi-agency tabletop drills—culminated in a flawless field-to-command communication model that allowed agencies to respond quickly and coordinate effectively across a massive footprint.

But the impact extended beyond operations. With real-time analytics, local businesses were able to anticipate peak foot traffic, optimize staffing, and increase revenues. Sponsor activations ran smoothly, and patrons remained engaged longer thanks to ubiquitous connectivity and immersive AV experiences.

The Legacy Lives On

Perhaps most important: this infrastructure didn’t vanish when the Draft ended. The fiber and Wi-Fi network Cronus deployed is now fueling Detroit’s summer festivals, outdoor events, and emergency response readiness. It’s a lasting upgrade to the city’s digital backbone—one that began with a handshake from the NFL, but now serves the entire community.
