Community Engagement

Connecting Detroit Communities

Public Wi-Fi in parks, cameras for neighborhoods, Project Green Light with DPD, and internet and phones for the groups that keep Detroit strong. This is how Cronus gives back to the city we call home.

Why we do it

Detroit Is Our Home

Cronus started in Detroit in 2008, and we have grown up alongside this city. We hire Detroit residents, work with local vendors, and run our network from right here downtown.

Giving back is part of how we work. When a park needs Wi-Fi, a block club wants to keep an eye on its street, or a community center needs to get online, we show up with the same equipment and the same team our business customers count on.

Wi-Fi Where Detroit Gathers

Working with the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Cronus brought public Wi-Fi to the busiest parks downtown. Thousands of residents, visitors, vendors and event partners get online every day, whether they are grabbing lunch in Cadillac Square or skating at Campus Martius.

We have taken the same approach into the neighborhoods, with Wi-Fi at Palmer Park in partnership with People for Palmer Park. Every network is monitored by our Network Operations Center, so it simply works.

Project Green Light Detroit

One of the Original Project Green Light Companies

Cronus was one of the original companies to join Project Green Light Detroit, the Detroit Police Department’s partnership with local businesses to deter crime and keep neighborhoods safe. Participating gas stations, restaurants, stores and other businesses stream high-definition camera video to DPD, and a flashing green light lets everyone know the location is being watched.

From the early days of the program, the big question was how to connect thousands of cameras across the city and record them in one place. Cronus helped answer it by building a dedicated network that carries Green Light camera streams back to Detroit Public Safety Headquarters. We still install, connect and support Green Light cameras for Detroit businesses today.

“How do you deploy thousands of cameras and record them in a central location? Cronus created a sub network in their network which allows us to access and record thousands of cameras that stream back to Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.”

Cameras That Help Keep Neighborhoods Safe

Project Green Light showed us what it takes to keep a camera network running around the clock, and what cameras can do for a neighborhood.

We bring that know-how to Detroit neighborhoods. Our community camera program helps block clubs and neighborhood associations put cameras where they are needed most, with the internet connection, installation and support included.

Our promise

The Detroit Wi-Fi Initiative

Our goal is simple: no Detroiter should be left offline. Through the Detroit Wi-Fi Initiative, we keep expanding connectivity to more parks, community spaces and neighborhoods every year, and we partner with local organizations to reach the people who need it most.
