Case Study · Greektown, Detroit
How Cronus and the Greektown Neighborhood Partnership turned one of Detroit’s busiest entertainment districts into a connected, safer and event-ready smart district.
In partnership with

The project
In partnership with the Greektown Neighborhood Partnership, Greektown Detroit unveiled its new Smart District, transforming the district into one of the city’s most advanced, connected and secure urban environments, and creating a real-world proving ground for next-generation technologies designed to deter threats through innovation.
Greektown’s transformation is powered by Cronus, with an expanded high-speed fiber network and a first-of-its-kind localized data center that keep businesses seamlessly connected and position the district as a leading technology hub in Detroit. To build it, Cronus ran more than 10 miles of cabling through the district and offered fiber internet to every business in the district that wanted it.

The story
When the Greektown Neighborhood Partnership set out to rebuild Monroe Street, the goal was bigger than new sidewalks, lighting and public space. With the street being rebuilt as part of the $20 million Monroe Streetscape, it was also the right moment to rebuild the technology that runs underneath it.
As the street came back together, Cronus ran more than 10 miles of cabling through the heart of the district and offered a fiber internet connection to every business in the district that wanted one. Restaurants, bars, shops, offices and venues along Monroe, Randolph and Beaubien could upgrade to dedicated fiber internet from a provider headquartered right down the street on Beaubien. In all, the network now interconnects more than 45 buildings across the district.
For business owners, the upgrade meant faster, more reliable connections for the things that keep the doors open: card payments, online orders, reservations, security cameras and guest Wi-Fi. Every connection is backed by the same 24/7 monitoring and local support that keeps the district’s public network running, and because businesses share the district’s 10-gigabit backbone and localized data center, there is plenty of room to grow as they add new technology.
The same network then powers everything visitors see on the street: free public Wi-Fi, smart poles with cameras and speakers, and the safety systems that connect Greektown to the Detroit Police Department through Project Green Light. Instead of separate projects years apart, the infrastructure for businesses and the public was built once, together, and built to last.
No digital divide in Greektown
With free public Wi-Fi for everyone on the street and fiber offered to every business that wanted it, there is no digital divide in Greektown. It is one of the most connected districts in Southeast Michigan.
The basics
A smart district is a neighborhood or downtown area where shared technology is built into the public space: high-speed connectivity, public Wi-Fi, cameras, sensors and communication systems, all running on one network and managed together. The goal is simple: make the district safer, easier to visit, better for businesses and ready for big events.
A smart street is the same idea applied to a single corridor. Instead of ordinary light poles, the street gets smart poles that combine lighting with Wi-Fi access points, cameras, speakers and sensors, connected by fiber running underneath. Greektown’s Monroe Street was Detroit’s first.
Fiber and wireless links that carry everything else. In Greektown: a 10-gigabit backbone.
Free, reliable Wi-Fi for visitors, workers and events. In Greektown: built for 20,000+ devices.
HD cameras linked to police and security teams. In Greektown: 124+ cameras on Project Green Light, feeding the Real Time Crime Center at DPD Headquarters.
People counting, plate recognition and other sensors that turn activity into useful information.
Speakers and audio systems to alert and guide the public in an emergency.
Computing and storage inside the district, so video and data stay fast, local and secure.

The challenge
Greektown draws thousands of visitors on game days, weekends and festival nights. The district needed to:
What Cronus built
One district network, designed, built and monitored 24/7 by Cronus.
High-definition cameras across the district, connected through Project Green Light Detroit to the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) at Detroit Police Department Headquarters.
Plate recognition gives DPD faster, better information to deter crime and respond to incidents.
Real-time crowd counts help with event planning, staffing and public safety.
Free public Wi-Fi engineered for more than 20,000 simultaneous devices.
An expanded high-speed fiber network feeding the entire district, with fiber offered to every business that wanted it.
A first-of-its-kind data center inside the district keeps video, Wi-Fi and business connections local and fast.
Multiple wired connection points on every block for events, broadcast, vendors and businesses.
Audible emergency communication systems to alert and guide the public quickly when needed.
Cronus ran more than 10 miles of cabling through the district, interconnecting more than 45 buildings and every pole, camera, access point and hard-line connection.
Proactive public safety
Project Green Light Detroit is the Detroit Police Department’s real-time camera partnership: participating locations stream live video to the Real Time Crime Center at DPD Headquarters, where analysts can monitor activity and send help faster. Greektown’s smart district brings that connection to an entire district, with every camera running on the Cronus network.
Cronus is leading a pilot program focused on proactive public safety, using advanced technologies to help prevent criminal activity before it occurs. With 124+ cameras connected through Project Green Light Detroit to the Real Time Crime Center at DPD Headquarters, plate recognition and live people-counting, the district gives law enforcement better tools to deter crime and respond rapidly to incidents.
AI monitoring
Greektown is a posted enforcement zone for alcohol, loitering and noise. Instead of relying on people watching dozens of screens, Cronus runs AI video analytics on the district’s cameras to spot problems as they happen and alert the right people in seconds.
Detects open containers of alcohol in public areas of the district.
Flags people lingering in one spot for extended periods, such as doorways, alleys and parking areas.
Recognizes aggressive behavior so security can step in before a situation escalates.
Spots crowds forming or growing too dense, using live people counts across the district.
Detects a person falling so help can be sent right away.
Sends instant alerts with the camera view to security teams and, through Project Green Light, the Real Time Crime Center.
Every alert comes with the camera view, so security and police can see exactly what is happening before they respond. The same analytics produce people counts by the minute and hour, giving the district real data for staffing, events and planning.
Built for events
The smart district is engineered for large-scale events and high-density activity. With district-wide Wi-Fi for 20,000+ devices, a 10-gigabit backbone, multiple hard-line connection points on every block and emergency audio, Greektown can host large gatherings and events unlike anything else in the city, without bringing in temporary infrastructure.

Coming next
Planned additions to the Greektown smart district.
Camera analytics designed to spot visible weapons early and alert responders.
Heat sensing to strengthen situational awareness, day and night.
Autonomous drones to improve public safety, extend situational awareness and support rapid response.
Drone delivery from Greektown restaurants, guided by the district’s Wi-Fi network for precise, reliable drop-offs.
Looking ahead
Delivery drones rely on cellular networks to navigate, but cellular alone is not enough. In the many parts of Detroit where cellular coverage is weak or inconsistent, drones also depend on Wi-Fi to pinpoint their location, home in on drop-off points and stay connected.
That makes public Wi-Fi networks like Greektown’s a critical building block for the next generation of autonomous systems, from restaurant delivery drones to delivery robots and public-safety drones.
Cronus is building Wi-Fi across Detroit’s parks, plazas and districts, laying the groundwork for autonomous delivery and public-safety systems across the city.

Construction time-lapse
The full Monroe Street rebuild, from torn-up street to finished smart district, captured by a Cronus construction camera and sped up into under a minute.

By the numbers
“Greektown is our home. We built this network block by block so the people who live, work and visit here are connected and safer every day. With the Greektown Neighborhood Partnership, we’ve created a model for what a smart district can be, and the technology is only going to get stronger from here.”
Tom Paparaptis, President, Cronus Internet
The partner
Cronus is headquartered at 1216 Beaubien Street in Greektown and operates multiple data centers along with an extensive fiber and fixed wireless network across Southeast Michigan, forming the backbone of this next-generation smart district. Cronus first brought free Wi-Fi to Greektown in 2017 and has supported the district ever since.

Questions
A smart district is a neighborhood or downtown area with shared technology built into the public space, including high-speed connectivity, public Wi-Fi, cameras, sensors and emergency communication, all running on one managed network to improve safety, visitor experience, business and events.
A smart street is a single corridor fitted with smart poles that combine lighting with Wi-Fi, cameras, speakers and sensors, connected by fiber. Greektown’s Monroe Street, the heart of the Greektown Smart District powered by Cronus, is Detroit’s first smart street.
Delivery drones navigate over cellular networks, but where cellular coverage is weak, as it is in many parts of Detroit, they also use Wi-Fi to pinpoint their location, home in on drop-off points and stay connected. Greektown’s district-wide Wi-Fi gives future restaurant delivery drones that extra layer of reliability.
