The story

Cronus Quietly Delivers Big

While hundreds of thousands of fans flooded downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL Draft, a lesser-known but vital player was working behind the scenes: Cronus. From fiber backbones to public Wi-Fi, the Detroit-based provider powered nearly every corner of the multi-day event, earning praise from city officials and national organizers alike.

Cronus was brought in by the NFL, the City of Detroit and other key agencies to design and run a multi-layer hybrid fixed wireless and fiber network for one of the city’s largest-ever public gatherings. As one of the only companies with the infrastructure to connect Detroit’s entire Central Business District, Cronus linked Hart Plaza, Campus Martius, Cadillac Square, Greektown and the NFL Draft Experience at Detroit PAL’s Corner Ballpark in Corktown.

When it mattered most

When Other Networks Failed, Cronus Stepped In

Just hours before the first pick, one of the region’s major fiber providers suffered a critical outage. Within minutes, Cronus automatically rerouted traffic from affected partners through its own backbone, so livestreams, TV feeds and essential communications didn’t miss a beat.

Roughly 40 large-format TVs in bars, restaurants, fan zones and sponsor spaces kept broadcasting without interruption, and the same infrastructure supported media stands, brand activations and the broadcast compound.

Public safety

A Backbone for Security

Detroit Police, private security teams and Homeland Security field units relied on Cronus’s high-bandwidth uplinks for real-time video, radio communications and body camera streams. More than 120 city cameras, many part of Project Green Light, fed directly to police and DHS analysts in real time over secure channels.

Months of planning, including multi-agency tabletop drills, built a field-to-command communication model that let agencies respond quickly and coordinate across a massive footprint.

The NFL Draft Experience at Detroit PAL’s Corner Ballpark got its own Wi-Fi coverage plan, with access points placed around the field, fan areas and broadcast positions, all tied back into the downtown network.

Cellular carriers also expanded their 5G coverage for the event by adding small cells to existing poles.

The legacy

A Network That Stayed

This infrastructure didn’t vanish when the Draft ended. The fiber and Wi-Fi network Cronus deployed now fuels Detroit’s summer festivals, outdoor events and emergency response readiness. It’s a lasting upgrade to the city’s digital backbone, one that began with a handshake from the NFL and now serves the whole community.
