Smart Districts

Smart District Technology for Detroit

Smart district technology in Detroit: public Wi-Fi, security cameras, police video streaming and people counting on one network, so your district is safer, busier and easier to manage.

What is a smart district?

One Network for the Whole District

A smart district connects a downtown, neighborhood or business district with technology that works together: free public Wi-Fi for visitors, cameras that watch over streets and plazas, live video that can stream to police, and counters that show how many people come and how long they stay.

Instead of separate systems from separate vendors, Cronus builds and runs all of it on our own Detroit network, monitored 24/7 by our Network Operations Center. District managers get alerts and reports, businesses get more foot traffic, police get eyes on the street, and visitors get a safer, better-connected place to spend time.

Cameras That Stream Live to Police

Through Project Green Light Detroit, district cameras can send live video to the Detroit Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, where analysts can watch an incident as it happens and send details to officers in the field.

Cronus was one of the original companies to join Project Green Light. We design the camera coverage, install the cameras and the secure network that carries the video, and keep everything recording and online around the clock.

Cameras can also add weapon detection, where AI flags a visible gun in the video, and connect to gunshot detection sensors. Alerts with a snapshot and location go to your security team and can be shared with police, so help is on the way sooner.

  • High-definition cameras for streets, plazas and parking
  • Live streaming to police through Project Green Light
  • Weapon and gunshot detection alerts
  • Cloud recording you can search later
  • Camera health checked 24/7

Foot traffic

Know Who Your District Brings In

With Zone Monitor, the same cameras count people as they enter blocks, plazas and venues. See how many visitors came, when it was busiest and how long they stayed, and get an alert when an area gets too crowded.

Weekly reports land in your inbox, ready to share with your board, sponsors and member businesses. No facial recognition, only anonymous counts.

  • Visitors per hour, day and week
  • Busiest blocks and peak times
  • Crowd and loitering alerts
  • Weekly email reports

Public Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi That Brings People Downtown

Free Wi-Fi gives visitors one more reason to come and stay. Cronus designs coverage for sidewalks, parks and plazas, with a branded login page that can feature sponsors, events and local businesses.

Usage reports show how many people connect, when and where, adding another layer of insight on top of camera counts.

  • Branded login pages for sponsors and events
  • Fair-use limits so service stays fast
  • Coverage for streets, parks and plazas
  • Usage reports by location

Future-proof

Ready for What’s Next

The network you build today should carry the technology arriving next. Delivery drones, sidewalk delivery robots, connected cars and thousands of small sensors all need fast, reliable coverage across streets and rooftops, and they need it on networks kept separate from public Wi-Fi.

Cronus designs smart districts with room to grow: rooftop sites and poles that can host drone docks and new radios, capacity for more cameras and sensors, and network zones for each kind of device. When delivery apps, drone programs or new city services arrive, your district is already connected.

  • IoT sensors, smart lighting and parking
  • Drone docks and drone first-responder programs
  • Sidewalk delivery robots and app pickup zones
  • EV chargers and connected traffic devices

3. Run it for you

We monitor the system 24/7, connect cameras to Project Green Light if you choose, and send alerts and reports.

In depth

A Guide to Building a Smart District in Detroit

Start with goals, not gadgets

The most successful smart districts start with clear goals: safer streets, more visitors, better events or proof of foot traffic for sponsors. Those goals decide where cameras and Wi-Fi go first and which reports matter. Cronus begins every project with a walk of the district and a conversation about what success looks like.

Build in phases

A smart district does not have to be built all at once. Many begin with one plaza or a few blocks, prove the value with real visitor counts and safety results, and expand from there. Fixed wireless and solar poles make it possible to add new areas quickly without trenching.

Funding and partners

Business improvement districts, downtown development authorities, property owners and cities commonly share the cost, and grants for public Wi-Fi and public safety can help with the first phase. Cronus can provide the documentation and usage reports partners need.

Privacy and trust

Visitors trust a smart district more when it is open about what it does. Cronus people counting uses anonymous counts without facial recognition, and camera programs like Project Green Light come with visible signage so people know an area is monitored.

Areas we serve

Questions

Smart District FAQ

What is a smart district?

A smart district is a neighborhood, downtown or business district where public Wi-Fi, security cameras, people counting, alerts and sensors all run on one connected network. District managers, businesses and police get real-time information about what is happening, and visitors get free Wi-Fi and safer streets.

How do smart district cameras stream to the police?

In Detroit, cameras can connect to the Detroit Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center through Project Green Light, which lets analysts watch live video when an incident is reported. Cronus builds the cameras and the network that carries the video, and was one of the original companies to join Project Green Light.

Can smart district cameras detect guns?

They can. Weapon detection uses AI to flag a visible gun in camera video, and gunshot detection uses acoustic sensors to pick up and locate gunfire. Cronus can add both to a smart district so alerts with a snapshot and location reach your security team and police.

Do you use facial recognition?

No. Cronus people counting and crowd alerts treat people as anonymous shapes moving through lines and zones. They measure foot traffic and crowding without identifying anyone.

Who pays for a smart district?

Smart districts are usually funded by business improvement districts, downtown development authorities, property owners, cities or grants. Cronus can design the system in phases so it can grow one block or one park at a time.

Can it work where there is no power or internet?

Yes. Cronus uses fixed wireless links from our own network and solar-powered poles with cameras and Wi-Fi, so new areas can be connected without trenching or new electrical service.

Is a smart district ready for drones and delivery robots?

Yes. Cronus designs smart districts with coverage and rooftop space for drone docks, connectivity for sidewalk delivery robots and pickup zones for delivery apps, and separate secure networks for IoT devices like parking sensors and smart lights, so new technology can be added without rebuilding the network.

Who manages the system?

Cronus does. Our Detroit Network Operations Center monitors the Wi-Fi, cameras and network 24/7, fixes problems remotely and sends a technician when needed. You get the reports and alerts without managing the technology.

How much does a smart district cost?

It depends on the area covered and the services included. Many districts start with one plaza or a few blocks and expand. Cronus provides a phased plan and pricing after walking the district.

Do you build smart districts outside downtown Detroit?

Yes. Cronus serves Detroit and Metro Detroit, including Dearborn, Southfield, Troy, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Ferndale, Warren, Livonia, the Grosse Pointes and St. Clair Shores, including neighborhood corridors, campuses and suburban downtowns.
