Is Your Store’s Internet Ready for the Holiday Rush?

The holiday season is when Detroit retailers make or break their year. Shoppers fill stores on Black Friday weekend, small businesses count on Small Business Saturday, and the weeks before Christmas bring the longest lines of the year. In the middle of all that activity, one thing almost every sale depends on is easy to overlook until it fails: the internet connection. Card terminals, online orders, inventory systems and even the music playing overhead all run through it. Here is how to make sure your store is ready before the busiest days arrive.

Why the Holidays Put Extra Strain on Store Internet

Most stores size their internet for an ordinary Tuesday, not for the busiest Saturday of the year. During the holidays, several things happen at once. More card transactions run through point-of-sale systems, staff look up inventory and process returns more often, online orders arrive for in-store pickup, and customers connect to guest Wi-Fi while they wait in line. If your connection was already close to its limit, those extra demands can slow card approvals and stall checkout lines at exactly the wrong time.

There is also the simple question of reliability. A cut cable in the street, a storm or an outage at your provider can take a store offline in an instant. On an ordinary day that is an inconvenience. On the Saturday before Christmas it can mean hours of lost sales and frustrated customers walking out.

Start With a Backup Connection

The single most valuable upgrade a store can make before the holidays is a second internet connection that takes over automatically. With a multi-WAN router, your store can run on two or more connections at once, such as a primary line plus a 5G cellular connection. If the primary connection drops, card payments and online orders shift to the backup within moments, often without anyone at the counter noticing.

Backup service used to be expensive and complicated, but today it can be as simple as a small router that combines your existing service with cellular. Cronus sets these up as part of our multi-WAN router service and our 5G SD-WAN internet, and we monitor them so we know about a problem before you do.

Keep Payments Separate From Guest Wi-Fi

Many stores offer free Wi-Fi to shoppers, which is a great way to keep people in the store longer and help them check reviews or prices before they buy. The mistake is running that guest Wi-Fi on the same network as your payment terminals. When dozens of shoppers stream video and download apps on the same connection, they compete with the systems that ring up sales.

The fix is to separate them. Your point-of-sale system, back-office computers and guest Wi-Fi should each have their own network, with guest traffic limited so it can never crowd out payments. Separating them also protects card data, since shoppers on the guest network cannot see anything on the payment side. Our managed Wi-Fi service handles this setup and can add a branded login page that promotes your holiday sales.

Check Your Speed Before the Rush

A few weeks before Black Friday, take a close look at how fast your connection really is during a busy hour, not first thing in the morning when the store is empty. If card approvals already feel slow on a normal weekend, they will feel slower when the store is full. Upload speed matters as much as download speed for stores, because card transactions, security camera footage and cloud backups all send data out of the building.

If your current service cannot keep up, there is usually still time to upgrade before the holidays. Fixed wireless internet is often the fastest option for Detroit businesses, because it uses a small rooftop radio instead of new cable construction, so installation can happen in days instead of weeks.

Make Sure Your Cameras Are Recording

The holiday season also brings more shoplifting, more package handling and more people coming and going through back doors. That makes it a good time to confirm every security camera is online and recording, and that you can actually find and play back footage when you need it. Cameras that depend on the store’s internet connection need enough upload speed to send video to the cloud without slowing down everything else.

Cloud-recorded cameras that are monitored around the clock take the guesswork out of this. If a camera goes offline, someone knows right away. Our Surveillance Monitor service watches camera health 24/7, and stores in Detroit can also connect cameras to Project Green Light for an added layer of security.

Plan for Pop-Ups and Holiday Markets

Holiday markets, pop-up shops and outdoor vendor stalls are a big part of the season in Detroit, especially around Campus Martius and other downtown gathering spots. These temporary locations still need reliable payments, often in places with no wired internet at all. A portable cellular kit or a temporary fixed wireless link can get a pop-up selling on day one and be removed when the season ends. Our temporary internet service is built for exactly these situations.

Have a Plan for When Something Goes Wrong

Even with the best preparation, it helps to know what you will do if the internet goes down on a busy day. Make sure your staff know who to call, keep your provider’s support number posted near the register, and check whether your card terminals can store transactions offline for a short time. A local provider with a 24/7 support team can often diagnose and fix a problem remotely while your staff keep helping customers.

Get Your Store Ready This Season

A little preparation in November can protect your busiest weeks of the year. A backup connection, separate networks for payments and guests, enough speed for a full store, and cameras you can count on will keep your checkout lines moving from Black Friday through New Year’s Eve. If you want a second opinion on whether your store is ready, contact Cronus and our Detroit team will review your setup and recommend any upgrades in time for the holiday rush.
